"Es wäre ein anderes Leben" (Video)

"It'd be a different life" - more than three million people left the GDR to come to the Federal Republic of Germany between 1944 and 13 August 1961, the day when work began on the bulletWall in Berlin. One of them was Christel Maye, who is now a filmmaker.

She decided to "go over" in May 1960, as a sixteen-year-old. This film reconstructs her "illegal emigration" from the German Democratic Republic and traces her subsequent journey through life, comparing it with the fortunes of three other women who stayed in the East.

With the border across Germany now open, Christel Maye travels back for the first time to her home town of Mühlhausen in February 1990. She encounters a bulletGDR as yet hardly changed by the process of reunification - the first free elections are not held until 18 March 1990.

The VHS tape is only available in German and cannot be distributed outside of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The tape described above is entitled "Es wäre ein anderes Leben" and can be borrowed from many public libraries and all media centres in NRW - or directly from this site.
