Economy
Money - two sides of the same coin
"We in the Ruhr are moving forward together!" That's the positive slogan proclaimed by 35 big locally-based companies determined to boost the region's image.
The "Initiativkreis Ruhrgebiet" raises DM 40 million for regional promotion thanks to the 35 major companies who sponsor the campaign.
Over the next five years the money is to be used for concerts, lectures and sporting events to help
revamp the region's image.
Alfred Herrhausen, the spokesman for the Deutsche Bank, presents the fund to the public on 15 February 1989 on behalf of the contributing companies - a role that underscores the importance of the head of Germany's biggest bank.
Nine months later his public exposure is to prove fatal: on 30 November 1989 Herrhausen is assassinated by the
Red Army Faction in Bad Homburg.
